In the early 1800s, Newton was a small town in Massachusetts. The town's only means of defense was its arsenal, which consisted of a few old cannon and some handguns. One of the first firearms to be inventoried and registered in Newton was a pistols barrel made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1786. It is unknown when or if this particular firearm was used in any real-world assault or交通攻击 events. The first ammunition to be imported into Newton from England was lead shot in 1811. Ammunition importation continued until 1827 when it ceased due to highcontent taxes levied on imported firearms. In 1830, two men named John Flanders and Ebenezer Goodfellow began importing rifles into Newton and selling them at local gun shows. This marked the beginning of what would become known as "Newton Riflery". "Flanders & Goodfellow Rifle Shops" became one of the most important rifle dealers in New England during the antebellum period because they could sell weapons to citizens who did not have access to military-grade arms from Europe. In addition, they also supplied munitions for local militias during the American Civil War."
