Newton was chartered on April 20, 1798 as part of the township of Granby and became a town on January 3, 1837. The first settler in Newton was John Smith, who arrived in 1798. He built a small cabin near the present day corner of Main and Winchester Streets. The first store in Newton opened its doors on May 25, 1800: George Hillman operated it for 24 years until his death on October 16, 1835. In 1838, Nathan Hale bought land east of Main Street from John Brown and founded Hale's Mills here to produce flour and other goods for local consumption. A store and mill were built west of Main Street in 1840 by Ebenezer Morse; this property remains extant today as Morse Place. In 1847–48 Nathaniel Eaton purchased land along Winchester Road from Nicholas Fenton to build an academy for boys known as Eaton School (later renamed Eliot Academy). It served as the nucleus for what would become one of the largest public schools in New England—the Newton Institute (now Emerson College)—which began classes September 15, 1847. After two years of construction work that included 56 students—the largest school enrollment ever at that time—Eaton School opened to students on December 4th with excellent results. Classes continued through winter term before relocating to their new building finally open March 6th 1850 after four months’ delay due to bad weather conditions across New England . At one point during its history there were over 1,000 students attending Eliot Academy! The building still stands today within walking distance of Emerson College’s campus providing access to an amazing amount of learning opportunities for generations to come! In 1870 Cotton Mather came into possession of some land east side main street between Center & Washington Streets which he donated back to the town free from taxation but with no buildings or amenities attached so that residents could use it freely for education purposes only! This gift has been used by many notable people including America’s ambassador-at-large William Seward who resided here while serving Ulysses S Grant during his tenure as governor (1868-1869) Additionally during this time period some very large mansions were constructed such as Mrs Frye’s home which still stands today next door to Mr Frye’s bakery which stood right next door until 1984 when it burned down rendering ituninhabitable) Development around these areas continue up until present day!
