Newton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Newton is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and its first meeting took place on March 20th 1636. It was part of Ipswich until 1801 when it became a separate town. Newton had 5 schools by 1820 and over 100 businesses by 1830. In 1868 Newton merged with nearby Maynard to form a new city with a population of over 100,000 people. The city declined in population and declined into obscurity until the late 1990s when there was a resurgence in interest in history and culture due to the growth of online resources such as Google Earth and MapQuest. This resurgence has resulted in several events being organized throughout the community including an 'Olde Dayswalk' walk through downtown on October 9th which features tours of some of Newton's historical landmarks from before it became a city and an exhibit about local food at the Newton Historical Society building
