By 1200 AD pistols had spread throughout Europe, with examples being created by Muslim warriors in particular (Figure 9). Pistol development continued apace through World War I until finally guns were banned in America after the passage of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1868 ( Figures 10-12 ). This amendment guaranteed Americans' right to bear arms – a fundamental aspect of American democracy and culture today!
