On March 15, 1836, Eli Whitney and his brother Solomon set up a printing press in Newburyport. The town was named for Samuel Adams Newbury, one of the first settlers. The first printer in Newburyport was Joseph Cotton. The paper industry declined during the 1840s due to competition from tariffs enacted by President John Quincy Adams. However, it revived during the 1850s when new methods of printing were developed. In 1861, Nathaniel Hawthorne moved to Newburyport and began writing his novels there. In 1903, an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown Newburyport and production began in 1905. The well produced over 100 million barrels of oil until it casing failures caused it to be abandoned in 1966. Today, parts of downtown are still used as part of the print shop building that housed the printer from 1836-1861; however no oil production has taken place there since then.

Newburyport, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, located on the eastern tip of Cape Cod. The population was 20,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Newburyport's history goes back to 1636 when it was founded by Puritans as a trading post on the then-unnamed Cape Cod island. In 1803, it became a town and in 1851 it became an incorporated city. The first settlement in what would become Newburyport consisted of 10 men and their families who arrived from Connecticut onshore during September 1636 as part of John Winthrop's second voyage to America as governor of Harvard College (later Yale University). They built a small shelter and started trading with local natives for goods they brought back with them from their voyages around these parts. This early development can be seen in present day downtown Newburyport where there are several buildings dating back to this time including the old State House which served as both town hall and jail until 1853 and also housed the schoolhouse that was erected in 1772/3 by order of General George Washington during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of American forces stationed at West Point on Long Island Sound. In 1692, when Plymouth Colony was dissolved by King James I following its defeat at Saratoga Springs, most of its citizens moved to what would become Rhode Island due to religious differences over taxation issues. The few remaining original colonists did not move away but instead founded new villages along the shoreline - Easton, North Adams, Quincy - all within less than two years after leaving Plymouth Colony. These villages formed what is now known as Northeast Rhode Island; however much like Plymouth Colony they disbanded soon after establishment citing economic reasons rather than religious differences. In 1737 Nathaniel Masham purchased land extending into modern day Providence County northeast of Narragansett Bay for £2000 ($3900 USD) which he named Masham Heights after himself and his son Nicholas Masham II who had earlier purchased land adjacent to present day Woonassee Lake in1730s for $4000 ($10500 USD). What followed were many contributing factors leading up to what would become known as The Great Migration; primarily joblessness among indentured servants struggling through difficult times following The Great Famine (1645-47) caused by an outbreak of smallpox that killed more than one third of England’s colonial population; poverty among those same servants;; increasing control over key transportation corridors owing largely to English military advancements since plague elimination campaigns only freed up resources for colonization elsewhere so people left searchingly Instead Of Coming To America To Prosper . Winthrop sponsored another voyage led by Captain John Smith in 1649 along with other investors including Samuel Pownall (owner/operatorof Saybrook Plantation) seeking fresh water sources westward across Route 2 from Narragansett Bay into Maine – something no one had ever done before! After some initial success finding springs near Exeter he abandoned this venture due primarily to lack thereof compared to previous finds westward – something that has been verified archaeologically today thanks largely to excavations conducted at Saybrook Manor since 1978!). However subsequent efforts led by various individuals throughout ensuing decades resulted in restored Paleoindian sites being discovered east or northwest–southwest Of historic Lyme Regis including sites associated with Clovis culture projectile points indicative OF A SOURCE LOCATED NEARBY! And finally…the opening up Of Maine allowing market access starting c 14th century which directly impact[ed] Maritime trade here
Newburyport was a small town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts from 1692 to 1832. It was located on the south bank of the River Merrimack, about southwest of Boston. The first permanent European settlers in Newburyport were two brothers, Samuel and Nathaniel Shepard, who arrived in 1692. The Shephards built a house on the site of what is now known as Shepard's Wharf. In 1705, they became proprietors of what is now called North Market Street. In 1730, Nathanial Weare moved to Newburyport from Framingham and started a grocery business at what is now State Street and Market Place. On November 15, 1730, Weare married Rachel Coolidge there in front of his store. Weare ran a grocery business until his death in 1770; his wife continued it for many years after his death. In 1802-1803, John Farrand built an extensive millinery industry in Newburyport with the help of local investors including Reverend John Eliot and others from Springfield Temple (now Holy Redeemer) Church. The mill operated until 1847 when it was destroyed by fire; however, much of the machinery still remains today at Farrand's Mill Museum inside the old mill building on North Market Street near State Street
