During World War II, several factories were built here including Ford Motor Company’s Auburn Bataan factory and Mitsubishi Motors’s West Saybrook plant; these plants produced ammunition, tools and other war-related products. postwar development included heavy industry consolidation leading to job loss for many locals (including some who had helped build those facilities). However new companies have arisen over time such as CVS Pharmacy & Caremark Corporation (formerly Aetna) and Dunkin' Donuts Corporation (now Dunkin' Donuts USA). In recent years much important research activity has taken place at MIT Center for Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab), headed by Professor Neal Stephenson among others There are plans to create a large public park called North Shore Park District which will include much office space currently used by private companies like Googleplex etc., but this may never come to fruition due to legal challenges brought about by nearby Southampton Naval Shipbuilding Yard Ltd., home of one of America's largest naval yards
