Newburyport, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,914 at the 2010 census. Newburyport is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It is bordered by Fenway Park to the south and east, Quincy to the north and west, and Holmes Beach to the northwest. The name of the town may come from Nicholas Newbury who settled in this area in 1638. The first white settlers were Congregationalists who came from Connecticut in 1724. In 1834, a group of French Canadian traders founded a small community on Cape Cod called Fenway which later became known as Newburyport. In 1837-38, General John Brown's forces destroyed Fort Adams at Nantucket after they refused to give up their weapons while they were being transported there across the bayou for shipment back home. This event helped start the American Revolution in America. In 1840-41, Nathaniel Parker (1789-1860) built what is now known as Parker House on Meeting Street which served as his farmstead until he sold it in 1865 to Increase Mather Jr., an early settler and founder of Harvard University Mather also built Mather Hall (now Livingston Hall), now part of Holyoke College; Mather School (now Dominican High School); and Griggs Store (now Macy’s). The first post office was established here on April 20th, 1847 with Wm Higginson as Receiver./Postmaster. mail service began November 8th 1850 with A G Blissman as Clerk./ Postmaster In 1860 Samuel Gridley organized what is now Middlesex County along with towns of Beaconsfield, Wareham & North Dartmouth into one new county named after him called "Norfolk". This gave rise to what are now three townships within that new county - Middleborough Township (northwest corner of Norfolk County line), Easton Township ( northeast corner of Norfolk County line), Andover Township(southwest corner of Norfolk County line) - all located immediately south of Boston proper including today's Newburyport township . Newburyport became an incorporated village on July 1st 1870 when it merged with Newton Village near present day downtown Newton about 5 miles SW/SE of Boston . On December 12th 1902 voters approved incorporation intoBoston and by 1907 its population had passed 10 000 making it one of only five municipalities inBoston still functioning under its own charter . At this time local mills closed down but many fishermen kept their boats moored along "the wharf" until mid century when high water caused them all too often to be taken away by waves during storms ..... One notable exception was Henry Ford who started his car manufacturing business here beginning 1915 Gary Wagon Works facility has been running continuously since 1916
