In 1945, the United States Naval Ammunition Depot was built here to produce munitions for the Navy. The depot continued to produce munitions until 1997. It borders North Attleboro to the north, Salem to the east, and Barnstable to the south. The towns of Falmouth and Machias were merged into Newburyport in 1998. The first settler in what is now Newburyport was John Winthrop who arrived in 1620 from England. He built a small cabin on what is now Middle Street. In 1627, he founded Woburn with his partner Nicholas Gorham and other settlers including his son Ralph Waldo Emerson. The town was named for General James Montresor who had been killed during King Philip's War three years earlier in Worcester. In 1785, Seth Carr purchased 1/4 interest in the town from Nicholas Gorham for $4000 which he used to build himself a home on Ferry Road nearpresent day Grand Beach Boulevard. Carr served as its first mayor from 1787-1789 under then-Governor Jonathan Trumbull and later became Mayor Under George Washington when that office moved from Boston to Worcester after that state's capital move to Springfield (Massachusetts). On December 12th, 1792 Carr sold his interest in town for $8000 to Ezra Stiles who also served as its first recorder; it was reassigned by act of Congress as part of Rhode Island Colony Partitioned into Virginia and Massachusetts on February 14th 1802 pursuant to Resolution 2190 passed by Congress at Philadelphia PA on January 3rd 1802 which read "that the said part or parts of Rhode Island not included within said limits aforesaid should be annexed unto this commonwealth". Under English rule until 1692 there was no law governing land titles deeds except hunting rights granted only by specific families according as their ancestor had hunted deer or bear close enough theretoforage; henceforth title deeds would follow residence rather than hunting privileges so thatlater generations could more easily sell property if desired without worrying about future hunts Licensees could also purchase additional land but most bought only one lot Site Planner:DrillMaster
