Newburyport, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 453 at the 2010 census. Newburyport is the largest town in Plymouth County and the second-largest municipality in Massachusetts after Boston. The town's name comes from English colonists who first landed there in 1620 and named it Newburie for John Newton, an official of Parliament who had accompanied the Pilgrims on their journey to America. The area now comprising Newburyport was originally part of Charlestown, which was founded by English colonists in 1630. In 1765, when Worcester County became a separate county, Charlestown became part of that county as well. After Charlestown lost its status as a town in 1803 due to its population size being too small for incorporation into a new township, residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name of "Newburyport." The current spelling of the town's name was adopted at this time. What is now downtown Newburyport was once a swampy area known as Plum Island Pond because so many eels nested there during pre-industrial times. In 1795 local farmers began draining and grading Plum Island Pond so they could build their farmlands on nearby parcels of land that would be developed into what is now downtown Newburyport Township. What remained of Plum Island Pond were joined together with Dudley Street (now First Street) and renamed Park Square after President James Kewen Park (1802–1889), whose home still stands on Park Square today. Today much of what makes up downtown Newburyport has been built upon or replaced by businesses; however, some original features such as the Old State House are still visible. In 1814 Isaac Brockman purchased 5 lots adjoining his house on Dudley Street from John Winthrop Jr., founder of Harvard University. Brockman used these Lots for his brickyard and schoolhouse which he constructed between 1815 and 1816; he also installed two miles (3 kilometers) long rowdy waterwheels called steamboats which served both his brickyard and schools until they were destroyed by fire in 1840). This first steamboat landing near where Main Street meets Washington Avenue marks one end of what would become Hackettstown Road later renamed State Route 128/Route 9A.. From here travelers took ferries across Long Point Sound to Quincy or Southold before continuing onward downriver to Watertown or North Adams via roads leading south from Cherry Valley until reaching Amherst or Nahant via routes coming north from Nahant Landing.. After 120 years only 2% remain standing... A few buildings including public library built 1908 still stands but has been converted into apartments

Newburyport, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Plymouth County and the second-smallest in New England after Gloucester. Newburyport is located on the south coast of Cape Cod and is bordered by Wellfleet to the west, Mashpee to the north, Falmouth to the east and Provincetown to the south. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Newburyport arrived during or after 1636 when Roger Williams moved from Dorchester into what is now Plymouth County. This settlement was known as "Woolwich" because it was one of several villages founded by General John Woolwich during his campaign for independence from Great Britain in 1775. The town's name came about due to its location near two rivers: Woburn (now Wolcott) Creek to the north and Narragansett Bay to the south. In 1773, representatives from five towns in southeastern Massachusetts met at Northampton for a special meeting called "to take into consideration proposals made by Drury Lane School Committee respecting a school for Negroes". At this meeting, it was decided that "the place where [Newburyport] now stands should be chosen as one of the places for their new school." Governor Samuel Adams recommended that Newburyport be chosen over Beverly because of its strategic position on Cape Cod's southern tip and its close proximity to Salem which had recently been founded as an English colony. On July 1, 1776, following America's Declaration of Independence, Newburyport became part of Patriotism – thus becoming part of Boston’s rapidly growing suburbs since British troops were withdrawn from mainland Massachusetts just prior to this event. During World War II many residents served with units stationed along Cape Cod shores such as USS Constitution (CVA-12), USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Purdy (SSBN 704) and HMS Illustrious (HS 9). After World War II ended many residents returned home while others took jobs within Boston area businesses such as Air Force Base Donavon receiving numerous mail trucks delivered right up their doorsteps! On July 15th 1960 Mayor John Fenton announced plans for $3 million dollars being invested into beautify Historic Main Street including restoration/remodeling of sidewalks; addition of public art; lighting; street cleaning; trash collection/ disposal; installation of handicap accessible ramps inside buildings etcetera - making this one small step but really a significant improvement over years past! The grand opening celebration took place on October 3rd 1960 with speeches by mayors Fenton & Vendetti followed by refreshments including pizza! Many local businesses along Main Street offered free pizzas until they ran out so come join us today on our beautiful downtown square!
