In 1803, when this area became part of Erie County and then Ontario County, Newburyport grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the mouth of the river and its connection to other towns along the Great Lakes region. The city was named after Colonel John Winthrop (1630–1689), one of two signers of the Declaration of Independence and one of three original Comstock Locks residents authorized by George Washington to build them. Winthrop had come from Boston in 1649 with his family and organized a small band of men for exploration and trade along what are now Erie and Ontario counties in western New York. He counselled against British rule during King Charles II's War (1688-90) but returned home soon after beginning his own governance as a royal governor. When war broke out again in 1702, he joined forces with others from eastern Massachusetts who defied Parliament's ban on colonial commerce with Spain and sided with France; this action marks one key reason why many people living near Niagara Falls also became interested in trading goods upstream rather than downriver when it came to wars between Crowns. Newburyport is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Boston metropolitan area until 1984. Newburyport is located on the eastern border of Essex County and the western edge of Worcester County. The townships of Easton and Northampton adjoin Newburyport to its south and east, respectively. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Newburyport were two brothers, John Alden and Thomasadam Alden, who came from Rhode Island in 1638. They built a house on the present site of South Main Street in 1640-41. John Alden's grandson, Benjamin Alden (1668-1735), moved his family to what is now Northampton Township in 1713 following his father's death there that year. Benjamin Alden Jr., uncle of Benjamin Alden Sr., became one of the largest landholders in southeastern Massachusetts during this time period due to his acquisition of large tracts around Mystic and Amherst beaches as well as near Watertown (now Webster). In 1727 he sold most or all his property within Amherst Beach Township to General David Dudley for £1 million ($12 million today). Dudley renamed it Westwood after himself and developed it into an enormous manor home which remains standing today - still one of the most valuable properties in westchester county.
