His products were originally intended for use by farmers and their families living near the town center. Over time, however, Fenton began selling his hats both inside and outside of his shop. In 1847, he opened a larger store on High Street in Newburyport which became known as The Hat Shop. This store continued to be operated by Fenton until his death in 1901. Between 1814 and 1847, Nicholas Ludlow created many different types of firearm hats (most notably the pistol hat).
