Newburyport, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. Newburyport is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town's name comes from the English word "new", meaning new or virgin land. In 1630, two settlers named Nicholas and Winthrop founded what is now Newburyport after moving from England to Northampton County, Massachusetts. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Newburyport was made by Capt. John Smith on December 20th, 1621 when he and his men landed near present-day Hubbard Beach on Cape Cod Bayou and established a trading post known as "Newbury". In 1630 Capt Smith's son-in-law Samuel Maverick built a small cabin on the site which became known as Mount Hope after nearbyMount Holyoke College (later Harvard University). This early settlement around present day Hubbard Beach most likely functioned as a staging ground for overland trade with Native Americans and other parts of southeastern Massachusetts during this period of significant growth in colonial settlements in that area. In 1635/36 an Englishman named Edward Winslow moved from Salem to establish a small fishing village called Winnipesaukee on Long Island Sound opposite present day Weymouth. He attracted many fishermen from throughout southeastern Massachusetts to his village which soon developed into one of the largest fishing villages in New England at that time due to its well-developed fisheries resources including cod stocks available off Long Island Sound for market purchase by British merchants interested in controlling access to these valuable marine resources. Many of these early Winnipesaukee residents were later instrumental in helping found Quincy and other prominent towns along the coast of eastern Massachusetts during this period of rapid development among Puritan colonists seeking stability following religious persecution within their own countries during this era known as the Dutch Revolt (1655-1665). In 1740 two brothers named Israel Putnam settled at Freetown Neck on Martha's Vineyard where they farmed until their death in 1776; their farmstead remains today listed on the National Register of Historic Places under consideration for designation as part of Freetown Neck Village Historic District.. It should be noted that both brothers were born outside England so they did not have any connection whatsoever with either Cambridge or Newburyport prior to their arrival there some fifty years earlier - thus providing further evidence that early English settlements along coastal areas such as Martha’s Vineyard were primarily composed by immigrants who had no connection whatsoever with either Cambridge or Newburyport prior to their establishment therein
