In 1641, John Andover arrived from England with his family who had settled near Ipswich . Andover built a house on what is now Andover Street in 1775 as his winter headquarters for running the new town government. In 1802-3 Joshua Griggs built Griggs House on Meeting Square (present day Old North End), serving as the first courthouse in what would become Newburyport . In 1874–75, the first railroad reached Newburyport when the Boston & Worcester Railroad extended its line northeast from Boston through Plympton.. By 1888 there were three railroads serviceable in town: one track coming down Main Street (later renamed Commonwealth Avenue) past Griggs House to School Street; one track coming up Meeting Square past Abraham Cushing's brickyard; and another track coming downriver from Quincy to meet at Weymouth Sound just before reaching Newton Corner In 1903–04 work began on developing present day downtown by filling in an overbank streambed that had served as riverfront until then.. This project led to the founding of First National Bank which still stands today across Frome Road from downtown square On January 1st 1870 - after years of debate - residents voted 3-to-1 not to annex any other villages into their town limits due largely to fears that this action would lead to decline in commerce within our community... After much discussion over coffee hours during those early years we did annex Addison village but it quickly declined because most people there already lived or worked primarily within our main Town boundaries .. Today many people attribute our declining popularity around here back then partially due too us annexing Addison Village without really talking about it with all of you!

Newburyport is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Plymouth County and one of the most populous towns in New England. The downtown area has been called "the cultural capital of New England", and has served as the home of many prominent institutions such as Brown University and Wellesley College. The town's economy is based on commerce, education, and industry. The first settlers to Newburyport arrived from Connecticut in 1630. They were led by Captain John Smith of Saybrook Colony. In 1634, a group of men from Ipswich under the leadership of Increase Mather founded Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts (later renamed MIT). That year also saw the founding of what would become Boston University. In 1786, after an agreement was made between Great Britain and France concerning trade goods with Native Americans living near present-day Albany, New York City residents voted to incorporate as a Town within their own county rather than pay taxes to Plymouth County. This decision set off a firestorm among other nearby towns that wanted to incorporation too; these towns included Yarmouth, Marblehead and Chelsea. However, on July 21st 1786 an act was passed by the General Court which allowed for Town incorporation within Plymouth County if it had 5% or more population growth each year for five years; this limit was not lifted until 1825 when new legislation granted voting rights to women so that they could participate equally in local elections. As a result of this policy changeover there were only four towns incorporated within Plymouth County during its first hundred years: Beverly (1810), Fall River (1814), Sandwich (1824) and Plympton (1827). During World War II much activity took place on Long Island Sound where munitions were produced for use in Europe; however due to political changes soon after Pearl Harbor it became necessary for all military production along coasts throughout the US to be moved inland into central Illinois where manufacturing centers could be created using forced labor – this resulted in major layoffs back at coastal communities like Newport News/Williamsburg/Yorktown etc.; however due to strong community organizations such as Stroudsburg Area Chamber Of Commerce & Industry who mobilized citizens throughout those communities numerous protests successfully kept factories open while workers received benefits including unemployment insurance
