The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and became a port for imported goods from Boston and other Greater Boston areas. New Bedford was chartered as a Village in 1792. It changed its name to New Bedford on December 15, 1828, after being purchased by John Spellman of Watertown, Massachusetts. The village retained its charter until 1903 when it was revoked by the county legislature because many new settlers had moved there since it had been established. In 1868-69 A & P Railroad built tracks through town which led to increased business for local mills along with new housing development around what is now downtown New Bedford harborfront; this industrial growth accelerated during World War I when munitions production shifted from Cambridge to nearby factories due to advances in technology.
