New Bedford, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. New Bedford is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and its first permanent settlement was on dangerous and swampy land that today forms much of the southern border of what is now New Bedford Harbor. The town's first shop was opened by two merchants named Nicholas Fitch and Samuel Adams in 1798. A post office called New Bedford was established in 1806 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1827, Captain John Fitch donated land to form the present-day harbor. The city of Boston annexed much of Norfolk County in 1854, including parts of New Bedford Township. This left New Bedford with just 787 residents as well as no local government representation other than police jurisdiction over a thinly populated harbor area that included small fishing villages situated along its coastline for centuries before they were finally consolidated intoBoston proper during thetwentieth century. In 1916, when Boston enacted an ordinance establishing night hours based on daylight savings time, many people living near Martha's Vineyard voted to move their lights out so they would not have to change their habits during autumntime when clocks were moved ahead by an hour each year under this ordinance - something which continued until 1967 when all cities within Boston started moving their clocks back one hour each year effective January 1st). It has a landing at New Bedford Whaling Station on the mouth of the River Don and support for two small villages: Southborough and Northborough. The first permanent English settlement in New Bedford was founded in 1623 by Sir George Weymouth and Admiral John Smith as part of the settlement along the East Coast of Long Island known as Newtown (now Hicksville). This early colony was abandoned when land east of Narragansett Bay became available for farming. In 1629, Sir Nicholas Raynold granted land to John Winthrop Jr., one-third of what would become New Bedford. Winthrop named his new town after himself, since he had lost an eye in an accident while serving as captain under Governor William Phips in England during King James's War (1603-1607). With its whaling station at New Bedford Whaling Station (now called Cape Cod National Seashore), New Bedford quickly began to be established as a major hub for maritime commerce and development around the world; this port played a significant role in helping to create America. By 1800, it had reached its peak population with over 10,000 residents; however during much of that time there were only scattered settlements throughout present day Plymouth County due to difficulties obtaining land from Lord Sunderland for whaling operations or other commercial ventures outside of town limits.
