The harbor remains one of New Bedford's most important resources with both commercial fishing operations and recreational boating being principal industries. Many local restaurants are also known for their seafood dishes or their geographic location on the peninsula that juts out into Narragansett Bay - this particular feature led to one popular tourist destination being developed specifically for eating seafood: Buzzards' Roost National Wildlife Refuge located about southeast of town along Route 2 between Foxboro Junction and South Lynnfield).
