The first knives were fashioned from stone or bone. By the early 1800s, metal was being used to create blades for tools such as hoes and sickles. The first steel knives began to appear in 1820 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte filed a patent for a new type of blade known as a "paring Knife." This new design featured a flatterblade with sharper edges that could be better folded so it could be carried more easily. In 1825, John Fitch opened his business at 4 White Street in what is now downtown New Bedford. Fitch was one of the first commercial knife dealers in America and he soon started selling knives made from both steel and bronze materials. He also offered customers service on his shop floor if they needed help with their blades or if they needed help sharpening their weapons. From this business venture, Fitch developed what is now considered the standard kitchenknife shape which today can be found all over America! By 1830, the popularity of knifes had spread throughout America and people were starting to adopt them as everyday tools. In 1832, George Stephenson founded The Sheffield Steel Works in Sheffield England which became world leader in producing high-qualitysteel knives! This company manufactured some of the most famousknives including James Bond's 007 pistols! 3 years later (1835), Knifemaker Amos Blanchard opened his own shop at 4 Main Street in downtown New Bedford called The Blade Shop! At this time, Amos Blanchard was one of the most experienced knife makers around! His shops quickly became well-known throughout Massachusetts because he produced some amazingknives including 20 inch slabs of Damascus Steel that could handle any task you threw at them! In 1837/38 George Stephenson finally died after suffering an illness that caused him great pain! At this point things changed forKnifemaker John Matson who took over production at The Sheffield Steel Works!! Matson continued making excellent steelknIVES until his death in 1912!!! After John Matson's death,,the production line passed down to his son Harry Matson Jr., who continued making qualityknives until his retirement in 1969!!!

The town was founded on April 20, 1794 by Captain John Smith and his troops who had just arrived from Rhode Island to help build a road between Boston and Portsmouth. At first called "New Bedford", it became the permanent name of the town on December 12, 1798 when it was incorporated as a city by an act of the General Court of Massachusetts under charter from King George III. In 1831, New Bedford joined with other towns in what is now Worcester to form what is now Fenway Park (later renamed Harvard University). New Bedford's history goes back well beyond its incorporation into Worcester as one of America's oldest cities. The area that makes up present-day New Bedford has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. The earliest evidence suggests that people were living here long before any of modern day Boston or Cambridge were established. One theory suggests that early inhabitants may have come from Salerno in Italy because there are many ancient tombs found near this location which date back to around 1000 BC! Another theory suggests that some people may have made their way here during the time period when North America was being explored by Europeans; specifically those who sailed along present day Cape Cod and recognized land stretching all the way down to Mexico as they sailed eastward! There are also reports of Native American settlements dating back even further – possibly as far back as 3000 BC! There are several theories about why this area came to be such an important stop on navigation routes during these times – but no one knows for sure!
