New Bedford, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The population was 10,798 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Cambridge-New Bedford, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's first permanent settler was Nicholas Fitch in 1636. In 1786, New Bedford became the county seat of Plymouth County and it has been that way since then. The town was platted on December 12, 1828 by commissioners from Quincy and Waltham. The first post office opened in 1829 and named Great Peddle because of its proximity to that community on the Mystic River. This name change came about because there were several other towns in Plymouth County with similar names: Peddleberry (1827), Needhamborough (1829), Northampton (1830), Dracut (1831), Dedham (1832) and Westford (1835). In 1830, John Ayer founded a school for African Americans called Ayer Academy which still exists today as Wellesley College School. In 1850, New Bedford became one of the original settlements in what would become Worcester County when it was split off from Plymouth County. At that time there were only 7 residents living in New Bedford; by 1860 there had grown to over 20%. During World War II, New Bedford played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location close to the then-vast manufacturing area around Fall River Junction and Watertown. Large portions of what are now downtown New Bedford were built during this time including much of the Trinity Towers building which still stands today as a landmark housing development made possible through government wartime subsidiesprograms known as "defense zoning." By 1970, however, most factories had been closed or moved away and many people had left town for more developed areas such as Quincy or Watertown; while some have returned since then they make up very small proportions of the population now numbering just over 6% of total residents according to2010 census stats). One major reason for this departure may have been residential – after all much larger cities likeBoston offered better job prospects than smaller towns do when it comes to getting into high paying professional jobs outside city limits; meanwhile even today many people who live near downtown NH find themselves unable or unwilling to commute long distances each day just for work reasons alone!
