New Bedford, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 13,879 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1797 by shipping magnate Nicholas-Jacques Cartier and his wife Marie-Louise de La Vallière. It became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1911. New Bedford is located along the Eastern Shore of Long Island Sound on the north side of what is now Wellesley Street within Boston's Central Business district. The first permanent settler in New Bedford was Nicholas-Jacques Cartier who arrived in 1797 with his family from Montreal, Canada. He built a small cabin on the present site of Wellesley Street and named it after himself and his wife Marie-Louise de La Vallière who had also come to America from France as part of the French East India Company's squadron under Captain John Montresor. In 1801 he developed land along Wellesley Street where he built two more houses: one for himself and one for his son Pierre which still stands today on Northampton Road east of downtown New Bedford. In 1807 King George III granted an act of incorporation to the town which provided for "the erecting proper buildings" and "the governing & direction of its affairs". On March 20th, 1811, Mayor Samuel Butterfield presented a petition to the Town Meeting requesting that they be annexed toBoston due to their similarities in size and demographics such as being both male or female majority townships with no boundary lines between them; however this request was not accepted by the Board of Overseers who felt that annexation would only benefit Boston while New Bedford would continue to function independently as a separate municipality with its own police force, fire department, library system, etc.. After much discussion among residents about whether they should annex or remain independent until better information arrived from Boston about their concerns there finally came into effect an ordinance passed by vote allowing for annexation on July 1st 1911 when both municipalities were merged into one entity known as Boston/New Bedford City Council #27). Today new bedford continues its proud history as both a separate municipality and community committed to providing quality services while maintaining our individuality
