The first gun sight in New Bedford was installed on a sandalwood tree near the present day Custom House. The rifle sights were initially mounted in embrasures drilled into the limestone rock walls of the old Customs House. There were also rifle sights located on various projecting surfaces around town, such as atop the courthouse tower and along the wharfside. In 1825, John Fitch erected a small frame building at what is now East Main Street for use as a store. This structure served as both a warehouse and gunnery site during World War II when it became known as "Fitch's Arsenal". In 1908, an addition to the armory was built which served as a training school for new members of the military police force before they could be assigned to duty with their respective units. This building remains extant today and can be rented out for events or weddings. In 1916, Mayor Edward Ahern commissioned architect George Burt to design a new CustomsHouse which replaced the original structure that had been destroyed by fire less than two years earlier. The new CustomsHouse featured brick vaults beneath its arches providing ample protection from weather damage should any portion of it fall into disrepair or if an emergency required its closure while repairs were made to other structures within town limits.
