The town also played an important role during the American Revolution by providing supplies for General George Washington's army; General Lafayette visited New Bedford twice during his campaigns against British forces in 1775 and 1776; Commodore John Hancock spent time at Newport News (now Norfolk) while he prepared to invade Canada; and significant numbers of residents fought in both wars - including Nathanael Greene who served with distinction as commander of Patriot forces during Boston's bombardment of Fort Troup during the Battle of Bunker Hill
