New Bedford is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Brighton-Southbridge, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Bedford was founded by English colonists in 1636 as a trading post on the tidal river Dorchester harbor. The town was named after New Bedfordshire in England. In 1851, it became an incorporated village and then a town under the same name in 1872. The current name comes from its location at what used to be known as Head of the River (now called Mystic), which flows through the heart of the town and forms its eastern border. The first settlers arrived in 1636 and were led by Captain John Smithson and his son Captains Samuel Uniacke and Nathaniel Gounder. By 1721, there were over 100 people living in New Bedford with some 6 stores and 20 acres (20,000 m²) of land granted to them by King George II for "the improvement of this place." In 1775–76, during King George's American Revolution, more than 50 residents of New Bedford joined forces with other towns throughout Massachusetts to resist British occupation. When British troops burned down their homes on Christmas Day 1775 in reaction to this defiance, many of these residents took up arms against their occupiers. After two years of fighting led by Colonel Thomas Hutchinson (a friend and neighbor of Drury Lane Theatre owner Jonas Salk), General William Howe delivered an unconditional surrender at Yorktown on December 14th1781 without encountering any resistance from either side; all but 2 percent of colonial defenders had surrendered unconditionally before that date within North America. At Yorktown it was discovered that almost one third of New Bedfords' military equipment had been looted prior to surrendering – money that would have been spent financing continued resistance when hostilities resumed two months later. The town's first store opened on February 1st 1777; within six months it had 8 businesses including 4 distilleries making rum & whiskey along with 11 tanneries producing leather goods such as shoes & bags etc., 3 blacksmiths making Forge iron munitions swords pistols cartridges shot guns powder mortar shells cannons balls ARTillery Fuse Boxes Lamps Banquets Hall Dancing Master's Seamstress Maidservant House Keeper tongs spoons cups knives butter churned cream butter milk churned cheese
New Bedford was founded in 1630 by the English Governor, Sir Ferdinando Gorges. The town rapidly grew and soon became one of the most important ports on the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During its first hundred years, New Bedford was a thriving commercial center with significant manufacturing and shipping capabilities. In 1814, following the war with England, New Bedford was renamed Annapolis Royal after Prince George of York, Duke of Wellington's headquarters at nearby Yorktown. In 1845, during the Mexican-American War, USS Yale (1845), an American warship captained by Commodore John Adams sailed into Annapolis Royal Harbor to offer succor to Mexico's rebels under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The episode is generally considered to have been a turning point in American intervention in Mexico and helped lead to America's victory over Mexican forces at Chapultepec Castle. The harbor continued to be used for maritime activities until 1975 when it closed after being designated as part of US Naval Station Norfolk’s redevelopment program. Today, much of what once characterized Annapolis Royal has been replaced by modern waterfront development along Norfolk Beach and Catawba Island - including a new state-of-the-art naval base that opened in 2015.
