In 1722 John Stevens landed at Beecham Point with his fleet of thirteen vessels including HMS Discovery which he named after Mount Desert Island where he had been searching for landmass related to India! He charted what is now called Massachusetts Bay while also naming several rivers including Mystic River after himself! After Stevens' arrival many Dutch families followed him westward along what is now Route 1A - today's Main Street - eventually settling near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where they built wharves, warehouses and later some homes! By 1800 only about 30% of these early settlers remained in town; however within 10 years over 90% had left! After Confederation in 1781 all states except Rhode Island joined together forming the Union under George Washington as our first president! As part of this process new boundaries were drawn around towns like Boston creating areas like Everett which bordered Boston proper while towns like Marblehead bounded Buzzards Bay beyond! This created problems for people living between these two big cities; especially those who owned property outside either boundary!! New Bedford soon emerged as one of America’s leading commercial centers thanks primarily to its location – right next to bothBoston proper (the original colonial settlement)and thenBoston Harbor!! Trade took place through open sea container ships sailing out from Ipswich harbor or coming ashore via Truro street just south of present day Canal Street; then being transferred onto smaller boats or even walked across Long Wharf using ramps opposite present day North King Street ! In addition local boatbuilders produced rowboats, kayaks & canoes used by locals & visitors alike !! All this activity contributed immensely to making New Bedford a popular tourist destination throughout much of nineteenth century thru much modern times

The town has since grown considerably with its annexation by Worcester in 1871-72 and its prohibition by Massachusetts in 1903 because of concerns about pollution brought about by textile mills located thereabouts
