After landing in America they were met with hostility by other Native Americans who believed they had invaded their land without permission from the tribe’s leaders. Over time however tensions between English colonists and Native Americans diminished until 1768 when hostilities erupted over land grants made by Governor John Winthrop to several tribes under his guidance. This violence led to 350 Indian deaths during this period known as the “Indian Massacre” which shocked both English settlers and American Indians alike. In 1771-72 British troops landed in Boston Harbor followed by an army commanded by General George Washington which drove out all of the Indian occupants of present day Rhode Island (present day Pawtucket). This event marked the end of Anglo-American conflict within North America; however continued skirmishes took place between European colonists and Native Americans until 1800 when treaties were signed resulting in ceded lands across most of modern-day Maine (present day Cumberland County) to Canada while still retaining some parts of present day Massachusetts (present day Suffolk County). This victory also restored some order among Britain's colonies following their experience during King George III's War with France (1756-1763). Having won this war against France President James Kieft appointed Amoskeag captain general of New York City Port Authority effective November 1st 1768 – a position he held until his death on November 12th 1770 due to natural causes only weeks after assuming it†††*. With Kieft's appointment came new opportunities for advancement for men like Amoskeag who had impressed him with their ability to run local affairs efficiently despite high levels of political strife at home.*†† That same year saw another important event when Increase Mather became pastor at Harvard University*††*%. Mather would later become one Of The Founding Fathers Of America along side John Adams.*‌* As early as 1775 Indian attacks began causing losses totaling $10 thousand per month from December through May inclusive(*). By late summer/early fall smallpox had spread throughout eastern Massachusetts killing more than 100 people*,‌* culminating in British General John Burgoyne's Invasion of Boston beginning October 14th 1775 (*). Aftermath: More than 3 hundred buildings were destroyed or damaged; over 20% of residents lost their homes; 400 women died childbearing—the largest number ever recorded among American Indians; 500 men enlisted into military service….A large part of colonial society was destroyed or heavily disrupted forever…..In less than three months Brigadier General Edward Braddock surrendered Philadelphia after almost four years fighting[…]In short [from] September 4th through October 14th quarter there killed about 200 (. . . *) people…………….Thereafter there seems no record whatever either by individuals or under any particular officer relating either directly or indirectly to public business… *. ‭(from "History Of Plymouth Plantation" Volume I pg 593)

During the early 18th century, New Bedford became a centre of learning with several prestigious colleges established here including Kings College (1668), Brown University (1765), Amherst College (1814) and Dartmouth College (1839). many famous Revolutionary War generals such as Ethan Allen and General Philip Schuyler were born or raised here including Nathanael Greene and John Stark. In 1785, construction began on what is now downtown New Bedford under the leadership of Mayor James Whitehead to create a new civic center that would become one of America’s premier tourist destinations. The city’s first major public building was completed this decade – a neoclassical structure designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte that dominates Widener Square today. During World War II,New Bedford saw significant growth thanks to its role as one of America’s largest naval ports with facilities involved in shipbuilding, munitions production and allied war efforts including supplies for both Europe and Japan. After World War II ended,the port closed but remains an important part oflocal economytoday through businesses such as cruise linesand container terminals

New Bedford was founded in 1630 by the Pilgrims who were escaping religious persecution in England. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the tidal marshes of New Bedford Bay. In 1824, the town became a state capital and was renamed Boston.
