It is the second-largest town in Plymouth County after Northborough. The original townsite was laid out on March 25, 1636 by Captain John Smith and his men while they were exploring the new world. The first settler in New Bedford was Samuel Maverick. The town of New Bedford became a part of the Colony of Plymouth in 1653; it voted to secede from Plymouth Colony twelve years later. In 1774, during the American Revolution, British soldiers burned down much of what are now downtown New Bedford after seizing papers belonging to local merchants and colonists. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on April 19th, 1775 near present-day Middlesex Avenue and Gloucester Street in New Bedford; British General George Washington led an army against Brockenbury's forces commanded by Countess Anson with over 50aked men under her command including many women and children. Many natives died or were captured during this battle including Samuel Maverick (the father of Nathaniel Maverick). In 1805, Theodore Roosevelt moved from Boston to live for two years at "Oak Bluffs" on Cape Cod before returning to live in Albany NY until 1809 when he again moved back to 'Oak Bluffs'. He had been initiated into Freemasonry as a young man living with his Masonic brother Hiram Lodge No 472 (later changed to York Rite) located just outside Albany NY - so he could attend their meetings which took place outdoors on long term lodges' plots bordered by marshes or ponds - away from prying eyes! In 1909 he sold his land at 'Oak Bluffs' and bought 3 acres today's Harold Dell development site west of I-95 between Route 128 and US 41/I-84 as well as 2 other parcels totaling about . These properties served as his summer home until 1905 when he moved permanently back to AlbanyNY where he spent most winters up until his death in 1919 aged 82 year old! Erected: 1830s
