The first airguns were made in 1892 by Dr. George Stephenson at the Boston Arsenal. These guns were called “New Bedford shot guns” because they were made in the town of New Bedford on Cape Cod Bay. The doctor built these cannons to shoot balls out to sea to test their effectiveness as artillery fire engines. He also designed these guns with help from his brother-in-law, Amos Kendall (1847-1920). In 1895, John Leland bought a gunsmith shop located on Castle Street in downtown New Bedford. This shop was known as “Leland’s Airgun Shop” until 1915 when it became the “New Bedford Pistol & Gunsmithy company”. At this time, John Leland began making all sorts of firearms including pistols and rifles using surplus ammunition from other businesses he owned in downtown New Bedford. From here on out, Leland’s Airgun Shop would be known as simply “Leland’sGunShop”! In 1898, Victor Armitage started manufacturing airguns at his business located on Main Street in downtown New Bedford. Armitage had learned about firearms design from Dr George Stephenson who also worked at the Boston Arsenal back in 1892! Armitage went on to produce many different types of handguns and shotguns during his tenure at his business location until 1903 when he moved onto larger production facilities outside of Boston due to numerous health concerns related to working with gas flames! During World War I (1914-18), many people living near Fort Myer turned into munitions factories due to funding restrictions placed upon America by European allies through the war effort! Many people who lived near military installations such as Fort Myer decided that they would like to get their hands on some new weapons so they formed militias or volunteer forces called the Home Guard! These people often acquired firearms either through looting or stealing from soldiers stationed within miles radius of our military installation! It should be noted that not all individuals who turned into munitions manufacturers during World War I joined militia forces; there were plenty of civilians who decided that they wanted some new weaponry too just like everyone else throughout history!! When America entered World War II (1939-45), once again government restrictions placed upon American industry caused many companies such as Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company (now Rock Island Armory) to go bankrupt because they could not find enough money lenders willing to invest in new firearm production!? Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company bankruptcy was a sign that things weren't going well for American manufacturers trying desperatelyto compete against Belgian manufacturer Royal Dutch Shell?? While there are certainly individual cases where individuals have chosen arms production over other activities due To financial constraints/limitations imposed by governmental institutions throughout our history however it is generally difficult for organizations such as corporations/governmental bureaucracies ever truly sustainable over extended periods of timeespecially when those same institutions are struggling financially themselves??? It's interesting how much has changed since America entered World War II huh?

In 1837 Stephen Morse built his mill at Ipswich Falls which led to his name being given to the current downtown area along with other businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Prudential Insurance Company and Macy's Department Store later coming under this name including several blocks between First Street (now Howard Street) and Congress Avenue (now State Street). The Lighthouse Tower located off Pleasant Street from 1844-1845 served as an important landmark during American Civil War times providing navigational information for ships anchored offshore while also warning shipping against mines laid by Confederate forces at nearby Buzzard Point Lighthouse which still stands today just off Route 6A about 5 miles southwest of downtown New Bedford Harbor

A group of New Bedford merchants followed suit and formed a similar republic called Newport News in 1778 to resist British seizure of that port too. In 1812 Samuel Gridley Howe founded Congregationalist church (later First Unitarian) at Fall River with land given him by his brother John Howe Sr.. Samuel Gridley Howe was a missionary to China who also served as one of America's first State Governors (1828-30). He laid out much of what is now Fall River on land donated by his friend Nicholas Biddle Jr..
