Methuen, Massachusetts has a rich history of target shooting. The town was founded in 1794 by Captain John Winthrop and his wife, Sarah. Methuen was originally a small hamlet on the center of the present day town. By 1831, Methuen had become an important center for target shooting in New England. In 1843, Methuen became the site of the first successful public show ever held in America. This event was attended by presidents and other dignitaries from across the nation. At this time, target shooters enjoyed exclusive access to beautiful surroundings at gun shows that took place in locales such as Quincy and Hartford. The early days of Target Shooting were incredibly exciting for both participants and spectators alike. With so many talented shooters vying for bragging rights, it was only natural that some amazing shootings occurred during this era! Some of these impressive feats include 511 consecutive hits off a 100-pound ball at 25 yards; 10 shots from an 80-foot bow at 50 yards; 8 rounds fired from a 20-inch rifle at 100 yards; and 5 rounds fired from a 12-gauge shotgun at 25 yards! These types of records still stand today! Eventually, target shooting began to decline throughout most of New England due to technological advancements that made firearms more accessible to everyone than they once were. However, Methuen continued to be home to some incredible shootouts between competitors and friends! In fact, one memorable shootout took place in 1984 when 175 people participated in what is now known as “The Great North Shootout” – an event which resulted in 11 wins by different individuals including future US President Ronald Reagan! However, over time there have been several attempts to bring backtarget shooting within our community – all with mixed results. The latest attempt came about six years ago when local officials announced plans for the installation of new targets on State Street just outside of town limits. Sadly, this project quickly ran into trouble after several individuals expressed interest in participating but not being able to afford equipment orournament tickets essential for such an undertaking. As we speak there are still active discussions taking place among those involved about how best to revive old school target events within our community!

Methuen is located just north of Interstate 84 Exit 169 on Route 3A which leads northeast to Northampton and west to Worcester; Route 3A joins I-84 near exit 169 after passing through Methuen village.
