Methuen, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Indian word "methuen", meaning "to give life." Methuen was settled by English colonists in 1640 and became a separate town on April 12, 1793. The Methuen Village School District serves Methuen and surrounding towns. The history of Methuen goes back to 1640 when English colonists arrived in what is now Essex County. They named the area after their friend and mentor, John Eliot (1584-1637). Eliot had come over as part of a group of Puritan pioneers who were seeking religious freedom from Spanish rule. When they reached England they learned about Indian Wars going on between the Indians and various other groups around the colonies. One day while riding their horses through some woods near present-day Methuen they came across an encampment of natives led by Chief Massaquinetouwassahungoagueyamook (or Massaquinetouwegane), which marks the beginning of human interaction with these indigenous peoples in what would become known as America. From that point forward it was business as usual for the settlers: trading goods with Native Americans and learning about their cultures before making any real decisions about where to put down roots in what would become one of North America's most successful settlements. In 1793, when Boston became a city under British control, Methuen became part ofBoston proper; however, it retained its own government until 1853 when it amalgamated with other towns within Boston's boundaries to form the Municipality of Boston. In 1922, Boston changed its name once again to New York City; however, Methuen kept its independent identity until 1924 when it joined together with other towns in Middlesex County to form Arlington Heights Township according to an act passed by Congress which gave local governments more power over economic development and public services within their jurisdictions than had been granted hitherto outside metropolitan areas*. After years of discussion among its citizens* (*See History section below), Arlington Heights Township voted on February 15th, 2009 to change its name back to Methuehnon* (*after much debate) following centuries-old settlement patterns that have characterized this community since its establishment.* Methuehnon includes parts or all of: Arlington Heights Township (northwest corner only), Bolton Street Settlement*, Christ Church Parish*, Deerfield Beach *(southwest corner only), Falmouth Avenue *(east side only), Glenville *(northwest corner only), Haverhill Road*, Ipswich Street Settlement*, Leominster Road Settlement*, Middletown Street Settlement*, Morristown Road Settlement*, Pembroke Road Settlement*, PlainFIELD Village* ( southeast corner only), Quincy Streets** [*all except northeast corner], Southfield Woods Community* [*southwest side ONLY], White Plains Road Town Center
