The first European to visit Methuen was John Winthrop in 1630 with his group of Puritans. The town's name originated from an Indian word meaning "meadow." Methuen was platted as a village in 1712 by Nathaniel Parker and James Pierrepont. When the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, Methuen became one of the few villages along its route to experience rapid growth due to its location on both sides of the canal (the other villages were Scituate and West Springfield). In 1828, Methuen voted to incorporate as a city. In 1851, when Worcester County was created from Plymouth County, Methuen became Worcester's second largest town after Southborough. At the same time, Methuen lost its status as a village because it had no vote in county government; it remains an unincorporated community today. During World War II many residents left for military service but many returned home once hostilities ended and more opportunities opened up for them within their towns or villages elsewhere in Massachusetts or New England. Afterward most of those who had served moved back into their homes while some established themselves again outside of MA but still keep touch with friends and family hereabouts through various forms of social media including email newsletters which they produce each year during Memorial Day weekend

When troopers arrived on scene they found that most of the vehicles on I-5 had broken windows oristration which made it difficult for law enforcement officials to arrest any drivers without wounding or killing those involved
