Methuen, Massachusetts is a small town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Worcester-Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. Methuen is bordered by Northampton to the north, Cambridge to the east, and Worcester to the south. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Methuen were the Pilgrims in 1620 and they named it after Medway, England because that's where they had been taken on their voyage from London. The area that became Methuen was originally part of Walthamstow Township and then Westborough Township before becoming its own township in 1802. In 1827, Methuen became a city and it has held this status ever since. The first post office in Methuen was established on October 10, 1824 with John Dickinson as its first supervisor. The present building was built in 1895 and it still serves as the town's Post Office today. Methueniis known for its apple orchard which produces some of the world's largest apples (the Orchard Boys are credited with harvesting an American record 29 pounds of Apples per hour during late fall 2005). Additionally, there are several agricultural mills operating within town limits including one operated by Brown & Williamson which processes corn meal into flour and other products for local restaurants. There also exists a large forest near town which contains numerous minority species of trees such as red cedar (which provides lumber for buildings), post oak (which makes charcoal), white ash (a source for gas lights), turkey vulture (a common bird feeder) and black bear ().
Methuen was founded in 1637 by Puritan settlers as a small hamlet on the west side of the river Methuen. The town grew rapidly and by 1786 it had a population of over 1,500. In 1825 Methuen became the first city in Massachusetts to be chartered. It declined in popularity during the late 19th century, but regained some prominence after becoming home to MIT in 1933. The city declined again during the 20th century, but recovered somewhat during the 21st century with new development including a new library, new restaurants and nightlife, and plans for a downtown redevelopment project.
