By 1870, most of Methuen's mills had closed but there still remained four: One stroke cotton gin (1860), Hopkins & Holford mill (1871), John Fenton's tannery (1881) and James Purdy's grocery (1904). In 1892, Purdy donated his grocery business to increase educational opportunities for local students through grants given to him by President Grover Cleveland; it remains one of the most significant gifts to Methuen education ever made. In 1906, Methuen voters passed a resolution endorsing prohibition; this event helped spur development around Prohibition-era bars across New England which persist even today as tourist attractions. In 1915, Methuen became one of two towns in Massachusetts to pass a liquor control ordinance which eventually led to prohibition nationwide throughout much of New England including Maine and Rhode Island effective January 1st 1920. After World War II ended, many jobs dried up due to competition from other countries such as Japan and newly formed Taiwan; however, several small businesses continued to operate until they too went out Of Business during the economic recession that began approximately mid-2009.
