A major employer is Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company which has facilities in Methuen as well as other towns throughout New England. There are also several small businesses in Methuen that provide services such as home health aides, flower shops, and car rentals. The manufacture of tires continues to be one of Methuen's most important economic engines with over 100 employees employed at two factories along Route 9A east of town near Gillette Lake. The company closed its plant in 2001 but reopened it later that year as an educational center for young adults handicapped by disabilities called "Goodyear Trails". It closed again in 2006 after being purchased by Pathmark Corporation who converted it into an office park although some remnants remain including a playground and two botanical gardens
