Methuen is located on the north side of the Connecticut River and extends east to west along the river's bank. It is bordered by Amherst to the south and east, Framingham to the west and Brookline to the north. The town has a total area of 20 square miles (50 km²). The first settlers in what would become Methuen were Congregationalists from Connecticut who arrived in 1692. They founded a small meeting house on what is now Meeting Street and named their settlement after one of their number, John Methuen. John married into an influential family in Amherst and his descendants continued that name until 1827 when they changed it to Methuen because they wished to distance themselves fromConnecticut thereafter. In 1768-1769 two families from Ipswich settled in Methuen after purchasing land on which they erected a small frame building which served as Methodist church for many years until destroyed by fire in 1886. In 1793–1794 another group of English Protestants came via water landing from Marblehead and landed at Long Wharf on present-day Greenough Avenue also known as "The Wharf". This group organized themselves into a company called Grafton Company which then built Meeting House (now First Congregational Church) on Market Square between King Street (now US 1) and Newbury Road around 1800 CE. Early maps show that there was no real village or town center until about 1800 when people began erecting fences around their homes for security against Indian raids or other threats during this time period before merchants started setting up store fronts near where today's buses stop at Columbia Pike/Old Route 36/Greenough Ave
