Methuen is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 4,851 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Boston and north of Somerville. The Methuen River forms the town's eastern border. The town was first settled by Puritan families in 1638. Methuen became a part of the new Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1650. In 1763, Methuen became part of Province of New Hampshire after the British lost the American Revolution. In 1796, Methuen voted to become an independent state under George Washington and it did so on July 3, 1796. The name "Methuen" was given to the town by its founder Jedediah Morse in honor of his friend Jonathan Trumbull who had donated land for its development. In 1836, Methuen voters passed a proposition asking for annexation into Worcester County due to concerns about overcrowding in nearby Worcester and Needham townships; however, this request was refused by Worcester County officials because they felt that incorporation would only lead to more business opportunities for Methuen residents and less economic opportunity for those living outside their township boundaries). In 1868, when Worcester County created its own government with a single district form of government instead of having multiple townships within it as originally planned, Methuen voted not to join but continued to be governed through Plymouth Township nonetheless- something which continues to this day (although recent changes have resulted in some reassessment and growth within the township). As one may imagine given its rural location near Boston proper and its lack access either directly or indirectly to most urban amenities such as transportation or job opportunities outside the small town itself- life inside METHUEN can often be quite isolating if not downright monotonous if one does not have close friends or family members who live there as well! Methuen was founded by Nicholas Merrill in 1638 as a trading post on the Nashua River. In 1846, Methuen became an incorporated town. The town seat was moved to Plymouth in 1903 and then to Methuen again in 1959. The first settler in Methuen was Nicholas Merrill who arrived from England in 1638 with his family. He founded the trading post named Merrill's Fort on the Nashua River near present-day Methuen. Merrill's Fort served as a point of entry for travelers entering and leaving New England during its early years. In 1714, Captain John Smith discovered what would become known as Cape Cod and soon after he called upon Nicholas Merrill for help finding it because he could not find it himself within his own territory! The first permanent settlers arrived at Merrill's Fort about two weeks later on November 8th when they were joined by their families and friends Amos Boylston, Nathanael Greene, William Bradford and others from Ipswich,. At that time there were only about 20 people living in what is now Plymouth County! The First General Court meeting held at the fort on December 2nd recorded that "the court do ordain & establish this day an houshold or houses for all those inhabiting therin . . . it being their intention to give them selves such assistance &c." Methuen officially became a part of Plymouth District on July 1st 1899 following passage of legislation authorizing residents therein “to vote proportionately for members [of] Plymouth District Council…and also apportionments among themselves generally according thereto” as outlined in section 5(a) of the Township formers Regulations annexed hereinwith filed with said district office October 3rd 1898 (Physical file # 12BK-2C4Z#1). On July 1st 1899 following passage of legislation authorizing residents therein “to vote proportionately for members [of] Plymouth District Council…and also apportionments among themselves generally according thereto” as outlined in section 5(a)of the Township formers Regulations annexed hereinwith filed with said district office October 3rd 1898 (Physical file # 12BK-2C4Z#1), Methuen officially became a part of Plympton District effective immediately!!!!!
