The town of Methuen, Massachusetts, was founded in 1624 by Puritans. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 residents. In 1825, the Methuen Rifle and Pistol Club was formed to promote gun control. The club met monthly to discuss ways to protect themselves from criminals and robbers. In 1829, the Methuen Rifle and Pistol Club organized a militia company to help defend their town against attacks by Native Americans. In May 1775, the Provincial Congress voted unanimously to declare all British subjects “ Enemies of the People” and begin preparations for war. On July 3rd, 1775, Bostonians scrambled into their militia companies as they began looting neighbouring towns in an effort to find weapons and ammunition. The militiamen response was quick and effective; within minutes of arriving on scene, they had dispersed the mobs and secured several important patriot stores. Throughout the revolution, Methuen took an active role in supporting American independence; on September 8th – just two days after United States Declaration of Independence was adopted – a detachment of local militiamen aided by artillery arrived to assist Patriot forces besieging Quebec City. After independence were declared, Methuen became one of America’s most supportive towns; it played host to conventions that debated issues such as adoptions of a Constitution and Electoral College (the first in North American). Methuen experienced some difficult times during the early years of post-war America; however, it continued to be an important community both politically and economically. From 1949 until 1990, Methuen hosted both the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) meeting which established world drug monitoring standards for athletics (the first time this occurred in North America), as well as United Nations General Assembly meetings which discussed various international topics including disarmament negotiations between America & USSR/USSR etc.).
