Methuen has had two mayors: Aiden Sprague (1949-1952) and Edwin Sauer (1975-1979). Sprague is considered one of the most significant mayors in town's history as he presided over a time when many important civic projects were completed such as the widening of Main Street which now forms the downtown core of the town and setting up a public works committee which oversaw many other projects during his tenure including a new community center that opened in 1984. Sauer also spearheaded efforts to bring about Changes for Methuen which included creating new streetscape features as well as expanding its park system by adding ponds and trails throughout its borders.
