Gun locks were first patented in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 4, 1795. The lock patent was awarded to John Lockwood for his invention of the "Straw Gun Lock." The Straw Gun Lock was a wooden keylock that consisted of an inclined plane that rested against the side of a barrel and prevented the gun from being cocked. The Straw Gun Lock was first used in a rifle game called "Tommy" which took place at Exeter Academy on October 7, 1795. In 1801, a silver key lock patented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte was introduced into use at Columbian College in New York City. At Columbian, guns were kept locked with silver keys instead of straw gun locks because the keys could be easily lost or stolen. In 1812, another silver key lock patent was filed by Amos Kendall for the "Gatling Keylock." ThisLock had two parts: one part held onto the barrel by means of screws and another part fit over the breech opening and served as both the lock handle and magazine release button. The Gatling Keylock became very popular after it was featured in an article about firearms in Harper's Weekly published on February 15, 1814. In 1815, Samuel Colt developed his own version of a keylock called the Colt SafetyGun Lock. ThisKeylock consisted of two parts: one part fitted around the muzzle to protect it from accidental discharges and another part that allowed access to ammunition magazines inside the gun. The Colt SafetyGun Lock quickly gained popularity because it allowed shooters to keep their firearms safe even when they were not available for use

The area now known as Methuen was first settled by English colonists in 1639. The first settler named Methuen was John Methue. The town's name comes from Reverend John Eliot who gave it to the town in 1796 after his victory over the Indians at Battle of Bunker Hill. Methuen experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its location midway between Boston and Providence, Rhode Island; its coalmining industry; and its location along Route 9A which made it a convenient transportation hub for goods arriving from those municipalities as well as for people traveling between them. In 1892, Methuen became one of two communities in New England (along with Watertown) to receive electric lighting. That same year saw the founding of what would become one of Methuen's most prominent businesses: Goudy & Bacon Paper Merchants Company, which still operates today as Goudy Paper Co-Operative Inc.. In 1907, Methuen had its first professional football team - the Middletown Americans - that represented local high school teams in various leagues throughout New England before disbanding in 1922. During World War II, many industries closed down within Methuen due to wartime production restrictions; however, coal mining did continue until 1974. After years of decline and neglect, methuoenspiritual revitalization began occurring in the early 21st century when several businesses opened up around downtown including Street Seavenger Records store and Zanzibar Cafe (formerly known as "Zanzibar" Ethiopian Restaurant). However it has since come back into some form or another with a new general store opening up called "The Dozen", which also serves coffee and pastries all day every day except Thursdays through Saturdays so that people can get their shopping done while they're eating breakfast or dinner there instead of going out on Fridays or Saturdays nightlife oriented streetside businesses have seen an increase recently but overall methuoenspiritual revitalization seems stalled again unfortunately

In 1874, Methuen merged with other towns in Plymouth County to form the City of Plymouth. The city has since grown substantially with various annexations including an additional 2 square miles (5 km2) in 1920 and 2002; as well as re-establishment of its full municipal government within its boundaries in 2013 following years of neglect
