Methuen was a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Methuen was Samuel Gass, who arrived in 1768. Gass's brother-in-law and neighbor John Winthrop built the first Methodist church on Meetinghouse Hill in Methuen in 1774. In 1810, Reverend James Fenton founded the Congregational church here. In 1812, Methuen became part of the newly created Plymouth County and its first mayor was Levi Coffin (1796-1865). Other early mayors were Amos Eaton (1814-1815), Cornelius Webber (1820-1912), Ira Casebolt (1824-1925), and Moses Browning (1828-1900). In 1822, Methuen had a school; however it closed about 1827 because of poor finances. In 1830, violence broke out between abolitionists and pro slavery people near town center after a slave auction. It ended with three arrests and one injury for each side. The events led to the founding of an anti slavery group called "The Garrisonians." The only fire that burned in Methuen during the 1800s was an accidental spark from a candle used by Ebenezer Higginson while he read his Bible at home on December 6th, 1801. Merely four houses were damaged by what is still considered to be one of America's least destructive firesever at that time! In 1840 there were five churches with 2268 people living here: Congregationalist (later Unitarian), Methodist Episcopal (later Baptist), Presbyterian/Reformed Dutch Church - Free Reformed Dutch Evangelical Lutheran Church - United Brethren / Arminian Protestant Association - Quaker Society of Friends - Episcopal Church / Anglican Communion - Independent Baptist Churches Missionary Society also established here then later moved away when land prices went up as well as expanding into other parts of America
Methuen, Massachusetts was founded in 1636 by Puritans. The town first sat on the west side of the Connecticut River, but when it became clear that the area would not be able to support a large population, the people decided to move to Methuen. The town originally consisted of only about fifty people, but it rapidly grew and soon had a population of around one thousand. In 1744, Methuen became part of New England and joined other towns in southern New England in what is called the Great Awakening. This period saw great changes in Methuen and many new residents came to live there. In 1812, Methuen was renamed Lawrenceburg after Colonel John Lawrence who had donated land for the town’s growth.
