Methuen is located on Route 3 west of Plymouth and east of Boston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,912 people, 2,812 households, and 1,953 families residing in the town. The population density was 971 people per square mile (351/km²). There were 3,915 housing units at an average density of 379 per square mile (147/km²). The racial makeup of thetown was 98% White alone; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; <0% from any race; and <0:1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%.
Methuen was founded in 1636 by John Winthrop and his wife, Katherine. The town originally consisted of only a handful of buildings and was known for its fishing and hunting opportunities. Methuen grew to include over 100 homes by the end of the 18th century. In 1768, Methuen became the capital of Massachusetts due to its location at the confluence of the Quinnipiac River and Methuen Creek. The town experienced steady growth until it peaked in 1800 when it had a population of 3,521 residents. However, by 1830, Methuen's population had dropped to 1,812 residents thanks to increased settlement in neighboring towns such as Springfield and Worcester. By 1850, Methuen had shrunk to just 173 residents. By 1960, methuen's population had fallen below 100 again due to suburbanization and changes in transportation policies. In 1970, Methuen merged with nearbySpringfield to form the new city of Springfield-Methuen.
