In 1836, Methuen had its first firearm regulation law. The town banned all handguns except pistols and revolvers manufactured in the town by sheriff or his deputies. This ordinance was repealed in 1841 because of public outcry.

In 1724, Methuen became an incorporated town when it joined Plymouth County. It had a population of 753 in 1800 and 954 in 1820; its peak population occurred during the 1830s with 1,142 people living there according to the 1840 census. In 1841 Methuen voted to become an independent city and has since grown into one of New England's most populous cities with over 127,000 residents as of 2018 (though this number may be underestimated as many people live outside the city limits). The Methuen Library District sponsors multiple book festivals each year including Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Book Fair & Free Library Open House Festival and Market Day at various locations throughout downtown Reading on Saturday mornings which attracts more than 350 vendors from around New Hampshire

Methuen is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 22,554 at the 2010 census. Methuen is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first English settlers in what is now Methuen were led by John Winthrop and his wife Prudence Playfair in 1630. The town site was chosen because it would be convenient to water horses on the neck of land between Pembroke and Ipswich townships. Winthrop's estate still stands as a reminder of his early endeavors here. In 1764, Ethan Allen's Rangers burned Methuen to the ground during their Raid on Lexington; no one was hurt but property damage resulted.$1 million (USD) has been spent since then to renovate and improve thetown center including new shops, restaurants, and a library which opened in 1987. In 1847-48 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "The Great Wave off Shore" while living with his aunt Hester Gifford near Ipswich as she prepared for her marriage to Hawthorne's uncle John Smith Sr.. After Hester's death in 1849 he moved back into Arkham Asylum where he stayed until his death two years later. His remains were interred there with those of most otheracing famous writers who died during that era: Poe, Byron, Shelley etc., though onlyHawthorne' s coffin remained unopened for more than 50 years until it finally yielded to decay in 2006 Accordingly when Methuen recently celebrated its 350th anniversary it felt timely indeed to reflect upon this stormy period just before our own recent centennial commemoration of one hundred years since some semblance of peace returned touched nearly all corners of New England following America’s “Great Awakening” Catastrophe/Revolution which had begun with British military occupation following King George III’s proclamation declaring independence from Great Britain on July Fourth 1776 Mention may also be made of Thomas Edison who came ashore at Falmouthport opposite Massachussetts Bay on May 15 1922 after a three week journey across country aboard an American liner called the SS Atlantic Daylight
