In recent years methueniians have made significant progress including becoming active participants in both their local government (throughtown government) and their larger community through initiatives such as home rule/citizenship referendum campaigns which have been successful multiple times throughout history; also working to redevelop several downtown areas around central Methuen into more vibrant communities with employment opportunities for locals; while continuing to make strides towards increasing public education opportunities for their children through programs like high school equivalency exams available online/in-person from select schools within communities statewide; all while remaining fiercely independent spiritually/ politically adherent to their unique way of life characterized by strong social compact between individuals who work togetheratively towards common goals instead of individually or territorially contrasting agendas which can often lead to conflicts or tension between groups - creating what has come to be known locally as "The Villages".

Methuen's downtown area was developed as a commercial district during the late 19th century along Main Street and Elm Street east of the riverfront. This shopping center remains one of Methuen's most popular attractions today with its large variety of stores and restaurants including several national chains as well as local mom-and-pop businesses. Other notable features include two churches - First Baptist Church which dates back to 1792 and Second Congregational Church which first meeting in 1793 - and the Methuen Armory which opened in 1869 and still serves as the town's main source of public police protection today
