The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and incorporated as a town on February 14, 1792. Methuen is named for Methuen House in Dorset, England. The original settlers were farmers who came from Hampshire County, England to what is now Plymouth County in 1636. They built fences around their homes and began to cultivate the land they had acquired. In 1792, Methuen became a town when it voted to become an incorporated village under the name of "Methuen". In 1822, Methuen voters passed a resolution urging Great Britain to end its involvement in the Mexican–American War and enter into peace negotiations with Mexico City instead. This resolution led to British troops being stationed at Methuen until 1828 when they left for California because of increasing tensions between America and Mexico over this issue. These military forces remained until 1845 when they were disbanded due to budget cuts made by President James K Polk during his second term in office. Since then, no more troops have been stationed at Methuen although there are occasional ceremonies held here celebrating events that occurred during those years (e.g., Remembrance Day). The former UMass Amherst campus was located on Plainfield Street east of Main Street in downtown Methuen from 1942-1975;[1] however it no longer occupies any buildings within the town limits today but remains extant as a historical landmark within the community across from UMass Amherst's main quadrangle building site on Eliot Road following its conversion into housing units some time ago[2].
