Melrose is a town in western Massachusetts. It was founded by the Pequot people in 1636 and was first known as Northampton. The present form of Melrose was created in 1851 when the towns of Northampton, Southwick, and Arlington merged to become one entity. In 1938, Melrose became an incorporated city. The town has a rich history that goes back to its founding by the Pequot people. The first permanent settler in what is now Melrose was James Gardner, who arrived from England in 1636 with his family and took up residence on the north side of Great Lake Wabanaki (now part of Springfield). By 1765, Gardner had built a gristmill near what is now Main Street. He also operated a saw mill and tannery on River Road until his death in 1795. His son, John Gardner II, continued operations until 1862 when he sold them to Nathan Hale for $2 million dollars. Nathan Hale also played an important role in the development of the townscape which we see today. He purchased land along Great Lakeshore for housing and businesses including a flour mill, tannery, hotel, post office and more than 20 stores before becoming governor of Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War. After leaving office he donated some of this land to help establish University Avenue as our town's main street - one of only two streets in Boston that were not named after Governors or other notable residents at that time! Some interesting facts about Melrose include: 1) It is one of only two townships (the other being Westborough) still unincorporated within Boston proper; 2) There have been no major fires within town limits since 1881; 3) The population reached 12,000 by 1950 but has decreased over time; 4) Most residents are descendants of those who originally settled here; 5] One recent addition to the community is Highland Park which contains several Target stores as well as restaurants and shops
The town of Melrose, Massachusetts was originally established in 1636 by the Puritans. The town was named for the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, where George Washington and his family were born. The first store in the town was built on State Street. In 1825, the townsite was bought by John Nash and renamed Nashoba. Nashoba became a city in 1903.
