Melrose is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and named for Sir Edward Melrose, 6th Baronet (1595-1672). The first post office was established in 1784. A small school was built in 1809 and enlarged in 1892. In 1924, Milton Academy became a high school and then an open-admission college preparatory school which continues to this day as one of the most selective colleges in New England. In 1959, the town voted to annex part of territory from Newton Falls to form a new municipality called Melrose East. On July 1, 1984, Milton Academy merged with Lowell High School and all students were transferred to Lowell High School until Webster Middle School opened as a high school on September 5th, 1984 which became Melrose's only middle/high school. In 2002-2003 the towns merged once again but this time with North Adams Township into one municipality called "Melrose". In 2009-2010 there was another merger taking place with Watertown township which will merge into "Newton Falls" on January 1st 2011

Melrose is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Melrose were Dutch traders in 1636. In 1769, John Winthrop came to live there and began teaching school near the present-day junction of Route 9 and Route 128. In 1803, Melrose became a part of the United States and its first post office was established in that year. The town had a population of only 100 people by 1870 but it grew rapidly through annexation of surrounding villages until it had a population of 4,000 by 1925. In 1868, two brothers—George Mather and Jabez Mather—founded the paper industry in Melrose with the donation of 2 acres (0 hectares) of land on which they installed an automated printing press called "The Paper Kiosk". The presses quickly became known as "Mather Brothers" and continued production until 1987 when it was replaced by an electronic press named after them. During World War II, many residents volunteered for service in various ways; one example was providing food to their fellow Americans who were fighting overseas. After the war ended, much of this wartime material such as uniforms and weapons were stored at nearby Fort Devens on Lake Winnipesaukee before being shipped back home to be stored again during peacetime. A large portion (approximately 60%)of these materials still remains today at Fort Devens including tents and other equipment from World War II! Today's economy growth comes from several sectors: health care services (the largest employer here), retail trade (which employs most people hereabouts), agriculture hauled in by truckloads from farther away each day for processing into food products for supermarkets all over New England; manufacturing has declined significantly since 2000 due largely to global competition but some businesses have kept moving forward such as JBL Audio headquartered here since 1978 which manufactures loudspeakers both electrical/digital products audio devices speakers amplifiers headphones amplifiers cd players mp3 players digital audio players Systems software engineering consulting management consulting services technology support companies
