Melrose is a small town in Massachusetts. It is located on the border of Worcester and Norfolk Counties. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Melrose is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Melrose" comes from the phrase "mighty green hill." The first settlers to Melrose were farmers who came overland from England in 1736. They built a log cabin on Green Hill Creek, which they named after their home country, England. In 1817, another group of settlers arrived by boat from Rhode Island and named their new village after General John Brown's unsuccessful attempt to liberate America from Britain during the American Revolution. In 1835, two more families moved into Melrose and began to raise chickens and pigs on their farmsteads just north of Route 9A (now State Route 128). By 1851, seven families had settled in Melrose and started businesses such as an apothecary, gristmill, blacksmith shop and post office. In 1861, when Worcester County was created out of parts of Norfolk County, Melrose became one of its first communities. As more people started moving into the area, business ventures got harder and harder to carry out without access to outside resources or assistance. This led to some residents starting their own businesses in order to remain afloat; these entrepreneurs would later become known as "melroses". By 1924-25 there were only six households living in what is now downtown Melrose; four were permanent residents – Mrs. Auldsbury (widow), Mr., Mrs., & Mr.'s three children – while two others lived for a time until being forced out due to eviction proceedings brought against them by other residents not connected with either family (one individual who took up residence in a vacant lot west of Main Street). (Downtown) Downtown was mostly composed of frame buildings that housed various types of businesses before demolition began following WWII: Piano & Harpsichord Shop (& Saloon), Driving School for Children Ages 12-16 years old (& Cafe), Clothing Store for Men & Women (>= $7 per week limit), Drugstore/Grocery store @ 6th Ave & Broadway where customers could buy cigarettes/ cigars/, candy bars/. . . . Most all storefront windows have been removed or are too damaged to be recognizable today but several survive as display cases inside local museums or educational institutions around town like DMNH [Directors National Museum]& NHM [National Historic landmark], among others. The elimination of most manufacturing jobs also caused many families residing near downtown exits unable or unwilling To keep up with prices resulting in neighborhood deterioration which can still be seen if driving past Main Street between Second Avenue South & Third Avenue North you'll see most though not all frame buildings that once housed different type stores All except 3 have been demolished since then While post office closed its doors on Elmira Road it stopped operations at least 2 miles away on Whatley Pond Rd.
