In 1624, a man named John Winthrop purchased land in what is now Melrose. The town began to grow quickly and by 1629, it had a population of over 100 people. Winthrop built the first school in the town and set up a store. By 1633, the town had two churches and one school. In 1635, Winthrop became President of Harvard University and donated land to make sure that Harvard would have a garden for its students to study in. In 1638, Winthrop married Martha Deane and moved to Lynn, Massachusetts with her. They had four children: Susannah (1639-1725), John (1641-1712), Richard (1644-1718) and Judith (1646-1728). Winthrop's death in early December of that year left the town with an immediate problem; there was no one who could take his place as president. A group of men gathered together and decided on Simon de Montfort as their new president. The new government soon faced several challenges; they needed money to build roads and bridges, but also wanted to assert their power over the local Indian population. de Montfort was not long into office when he discovered that his predecessor had mismanaged some of the funds allotted for road construction. This resulted in a financial crisis for the new government which saw many people lose their jobs or leave the community altogether. Despite this lack of success, de Montfort continued to lead the government until his death in February 1649 at age 83 years old. He is often considered as one of history's most significant leaders because of his work on behalf of democracy and self-reliance within American colonies during its earliest days

Melrose, Massachusetts is a small town in the southwestern corner of Massachusetts. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Melrose was first settled in 1736 by Captain John Winthrop and his family. The name comes from the French word "melode" meaning "a meadow near a river". Captain Winthrop's brother, Samuel, also founded Melrose in 1738. The town became an incorporated village on April 14, 1827. On November 15, 1872, it became a town when its residents ratified a amendment to the Constitution defining towns as "villages having a population of three thousand or more". On July 16, 1951, Melrose lost its charter as an incorporated town because it had failed to meet certain requirements including passing an annual fire prevention bill and levying taxes for public works such as streetlights and sewers. A referendum to keep the town status was held on October 5th but with only 50% voter turnout it passed without change. On January 1st 2006 Melrose officially became an unincorporated community once again after passing another referendum that repealed all ordinances passed since 1951 except for regulations related to open fires (which are still enforced). There are several businesses located in Melrose including two grocery stores and one hardware store which has been operating continuously since 1928. Other services offered include dry erase boards and Xerox machines for business use or home office use; UPS deliveries; laundry service; pet-sitting; fishing trips; airplane rides (including air travel around New England); golf lessons; dog walking tours; ice cream parlors/convenience stores/diner restaurants etc.; There is also a post office which provides mail services including mail delivery to both local street addresses within the community as well as outlying areas such as Milton and Scituate. A library is also located in Malvern Hills adjacent to Springfield Center mall where books can be borrowed free of charge from any branch library system anywhere in North America!

The area that would become Melrose was first settled by the Algonquins in 1630 and became part of the English colony of Plymouth in 1635. In 1765, a township was laid out there named for Colonel John Melrose (1615-76), an officer in Lord Dartmouth's regiment who had gone with General William Howe during the American Revolution. In 1812, residents of what would become Melrose petitioned Congress to be given a town charter because they felt they were too poorly served by their villages near Boston. On July 1, 1813, with 581 signatures on a petition submitted to the Board of Chosen Freeholders,Melrose Townshend was organized as a village withinBoston Township. At first all but one resident lived in homes built on Meetinghouse Hill; later additions included churches and schools. In 1827, when Boston Township changed its name to Quincy County, Melrose became part of that county as well. However, due to disagreements about boundaries between Quincy County and other counties it remained split into two parts until 1923 when both parts were reunited under one name - Quincy County - and again split into two parts until 2007 when they were reunified under one name once more - Middlesex County - makingMelrose an official town in that county as well as Quincy and Suffolk Counties which make up Boston Metropolitan Area
It is said that Melrose was founded in 1638 by the Reverend John Eliot. It became a fashionable village for merchants and lawyers because of its proximity to Boston. After the American Revolution, Melrose lost some of its privileges but regained them after the Treaty of Paris.
