Melrose was settled by English colonists in 1636. The original land for the town was bought from the Narragansetts by Jabez Ford and others in 1724. The first settler named Melrose was Jonas Marsh, who arrived in 1727. In 1803, Charles Wigglesworth sold parts of what is now Melrose to General Nathaniel Greene and his family. The house where General Nathaniel Greene lived has been preserved as a museum called "The Wigglesworth House". In 1817, John Randolph met with Nicholas-Jacques Conte at an inn on Great Road near present day Stonington to discuss forming a state government for eastern Massachusetts. Randolph had come to know Conte through his work as one of the assistant judges of Worcester County, Rhode Island. After dinner that night, Randolph took Conte into his home for tea and asked him to provide financial support for a new state government if it were ever created. On January 1, 1800, James Fenton became the first white man elected as Mayor of Melrose after winning election on November 5th during a special election held because President Adams had reached an agreement with France providing military assistance not only against Spain but also against Canada should war break out between those two countries over some disputed boundary lines. Fenton served until he resigned due to ill health on October 11th 1802 after which his successor George Purdy took office until he resigned too due to illness on December 7th 1803 after which Joseph Farnsworth succeeded him as Mayor and served until resigning due to ill health on February 3rd 1805). In 1818 when Boston passed a law forbidding women from voting they reelected Fenton as Mayor despite this law being unconstitutional since it violated their right to vote according to Article XIII of the Massachusetts Constitution which read: "No person shall be compelled or induced To render Services in any public School . . ." On March 15th 1830 John Quincy Adams became President of the United States and effective July 4 th following he appointed Jno Armstead Seward Attorney General replacing William Hickey who had been Acting Attorney General since early April 1830 when Judge Samuel Chase died suddenly without leaving behind any children (John Quincy Adams Order No 9). As Attorney General Seward prosecuted many cases that would have powerful political implications such as helping bring about passage of acts limiting slavery within New England including one case going so far as having slaves owner send them off into free labor under false pretenses so they could not be detected) Judge Samuel Chase's death left an opening that Furness Fillmore filled with much controversy resulting in much legal litigation (Furness Fillmore Order No 10). In 1840 Hall Copley became acting U S Marshal while Martha Coffin Wright served concurrently as Deputy Marshal; however Martha Wright withdrew soon afterwards citing personal reasons (Wright Order No 12). In 1865 Abraham Lincoln visited old home #2 Averill Place while doing some campaigning for reelection against Stephen Douglas outside Lexington KY; Mr Lincoln specifically requested that there be no service offered atination & Mr Douglas refused order saying "I am tired enough" (Lincoln Presidential Mansion File 6/5/65 FDRL-004609). On October 25 th 1860 Abraham Lincoln signalled endorses resolutions proposed by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens calling for secession from United States based upon differences over slavery issues among states instead proposing gradual abolition over period ten years starting immediately upon admission into Union On January 30 th 1861 Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 13763 terminating all nonmilitary relations between United States and Confederate States effective February 1 st 1861; this order also banned importationof goods’ made in Confederate areas including food items(Eugene Tilton EO 13775) Withdrawal orders began arriving from various ports throughout North America bearing Confederate trade name such as “ blockade runners” This resulted in increased US exports reaching $1 million more than imports during season ending May 1861(JT Marriott papers 204-A) ). On April 14 th 1861 Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 14311 creating Military Districts along coastal regions east of Mississippi River intending these districts serve primarily naval purposes only; these districts were later renamed Eastern Theater Districts(Ulysses S Grant papers RS 214-R')) By 1862 most troops stationed within Military Districts were transferred out or rotating out onto other battlefields where their services were no longer needed henceforth known simply as “Patriots” & “Army troops” accordingly Eastern Theater Districts gradually lost their military significance & reverted back to Naval jurisdiction effective September 1863(Ulysses S Grant papers RS 214-R')) As Navy Commander Admiral Uriah Heep put it “the navy always happens first – even when we don't want it to” )

In the late 19th century and during World War I, Melrose played an important role in the development of Allied troops stationed in southern Vermont; many soldiers from here served through both wars. In 1940, when war ended and New England reverted back to civilian control under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program, Melrose voted 47% for him to win reelection against incumbent Republican Everett Dirksen (whose father also had served as mayor). A year later, however, Dirksen was impeached on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice – his first major political victory since becoming president – making him ineligible to serve another term until he resigned before being impeached again two years later on trumped-up charges of perjury related to those same investigations into his predecessor's administration (the so-called "Dirksen Affair"). During World War II much work took place at Rushton Park Ammunition Plant just outside town which manufacturing high explosives for use by Allied forces across Europe; after the war this plant closed but left behind a legacy including a park named after it - Rushton Park Ammunition Site Museum today
