On May 1st 1895, an election resulted in incorporation as a township with a population size of 712". "With rapid growth throughout most portions the state during that period," reported "The Republican" newspaper on October 2nd 1898 "it may be said that not one township but six out thereof amalgamated with other townships within one year." By 1910 there were 11 townships comprising Berkshire County: Athol (later Arlington), Bickford Heights (later Brookline), Cambridgeport (later Holyoke), Granby (later Northampton), Lanesborough (now Littleton), Natick (now Newtona)), Needham (now Amherst), Reading (now Lawrenceville), Sharon Park (), Westborough () and Winthrop (). Of these only Arlington Township continued as an entity separate from neighboring townships through annexation into Arlington Township proper following World War II." "Although many residents continue to reside within their individual villages...most people living within township take care not to cross its borders more than necessary."
