In 1825, a large frame building was erected on the southeast corner of King and Broadway. The building became known as "The Globe" because it served as a meeting place for townspeople and military officers. In 1851, a second large frame building was erected on the northwest corner of King and Broadway. This building became known as "The Arsenal". It housed a arsenal where people could purchase guns and ammunition. In 1865, a third large frame building was erected on the northeast corner of King and Broadway. This building became known as "The Armory". It housed a arsenal where people could purchase guns and ammunition again. In 1912, another large framebuilding was erected on the southeast corner of King and Broadway. This new building became known as "The Star". It had many different functions such as being used as a post office, grocery store, movie theater, etc.

Melrose, Massachusetts is a small town located in western Massachusetts. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, MA metropolitan area. Melrose is best known for its large apple orchards and for being one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. In 1624, English colonists named it after Mount Royal in central Canada. The first settlers arrived in what is now Melrose in 1624 by ship from England. They were led by Governor John Winthrop and his son Massasoit. The original land that would become Melrose was swampy and had no good access to water so the first farmers built huts on high ground near where today's Main Street joins Route 1A (now Commonwealth Avenue). By 1630, some 50 people lived in what became Melrose. Many of these early settlers were veterans of King Philip's War who had fought against Spanish forces in Mexico and then returned home to find their farms confiscated during the war. In 1818, when Massachusetts became a state, Melrose voted to join with Quincy as a town. At that time, most of the agricultural acreage around present day Main Street was uninhabited woods which served as hunting grounds for local Indians who also fished and gathered wooded resources nearby. However, as more people moved into town over the years they began buying orchards from local farmers while maintaining their own homes and farms back east whence they got their apples (orchard) produce - all without having to leave their comfortable lives behind at home! Most residents today still live close to their homes - just over two miles away on average - but there are several businesses located within walking distance including an elementary school (grades K-5), community center (6-12), post office (15 minutes away), grocery store (10 minutes away), liquor store (5 minutes away), dental clinic (1 minute away) and hair salon/spa/massage parlor comborette! Melrose was originally a small town in Massachusetts. In 1847, it became the location for the first presidential inauguration in U.S. history, and in 1860, it became the site of the Union army's winter encampment during the American Civil War.
