The first post office opened in 1806 and continued serving through 1827; it was renamed Marloweville in 1827 after postmaster Jeremiah Marlowe (1781-1846). In 1860, when Melrose incorporated as a town, its only officer was clerk; all other activities were handled by committees appointed by township leaders or by the board of selectmen which consisted of seven members each elected staggered four times yearly with one seat being vacated each year due to death or resignation. A fire destroyed most of the townhall on December 12th 1908 and replaced it with an modern building completed in 1959 which still functions as the Town Hall Administration Building today
